Is it that you want the links to other posts where we've made the proposal(s), or do you prefer that we copy the text body into a post here in this thread, or both?

Copy the text if you've already proposed one. We should keep it in once place for ease of reference.

Thank ye kind.

To that effect, copied over from the thread about our Paths, two possibilities for a fourth (because I choose to hedge bets if an alliance fails):

1) Proposing an alliance with the Unicorn. Save the peasantry, artisans, culture (tangible and non-) and artworks of both Clans -- from all Clans, if we can -- using Crane influence and tangible resources and Unicorn man- and horsepower. The Asahina have defensive and healing magics; use them, and use them broadly and fairly. Further I would suggest ignoring the notion of funnelling to the Colonies (madness!) and suggest defensive bulwarks in Crane lands, where the Daidoji know the terrain to best advantage and where croplands to support the influx of people may be preserved. That said, twin bulwarks in both Clan territories would work even better; I am unfamiliar with the Unicorn territories, and unwilling to speculate on their behalf without that knowledge. Further notions on Crane involvement here; well, see below and add portions as desired.

This is the same proposal, essentially, that I floated in a separate thread last month.

2) The Safehold. Should alliance fail, we should do that very same thing to the best of our ability -- alone. Gather the arts, the literature, all the creations of the Empire. Call the people of Rokugan in; shelter, support them. Be prepared to call in every favour, every alliance; declare the lands of the Crane a neutal ground, where those of other Clans, even Spider who reject Kanpeki's madness, may find shelter and look for allies with the aid of the Doji. Send our duelists and magistrates as roving protectors, set the Daidoji to peppering our borders with ambushes for those who act with hostile intent, the Asahina to soothe.

And if the Crane were to fall under the onslaught of so much? We would fall as Crane, honourable, alliance-forming, guardians of the culture we created and the people we have guided for so long.

I'm going to type up something later once I digested this.

On drawbacks (feel free to add any other thoughts to these):

For my first proposal, first and foremost is perhaps the drain on Clan resources in the effort to support both our own efforts and those of the Unicorn. There is also guilt-by-association from the other Clans in prioritizing, among other things, the peasantry -- and suspicion and distrust, if by Unicorn desires those peasants are then armed. It is possible that the Crane will expend so much that it is once again on weak footing when the crisis has passed, even if we succeed with our goals.

For the second, going it alone, there is also the expenditure of resources and manpower on a goal which, noble and needed as it may be, may be doomed to failure. There is also the potential perception of cowardice, of failing to throw against the darkness and instead falling back on a defensive posture in our attempt to protect people, culture, and the knowledge of that culture. Other Clans may also suspect us of attempting to poach their own, if Crane efforts spread far enough, and react badly.

You know what's fairly safe? Dragon territory.

True this; though it requires some considerable effort to get there and is, if I'm not mistaken, something of a precarious existence at times, at the best of times ...

Still, not something to be dismissed out of hand, possibly.

Dragon territory is wonderfully safe from everything except starvation. Also, hordes of Jigoku-powered pyromaniac Yobanjin.

We are the LEFT HAND, not scouts or cowards running to the Colonies. We can stay in the Empire and be the Left hand, the rest of the clans need. Exchange favors, calm the warrior's minds with wordeful art and all these things that we do, but NOT FOR DAIGOTSU. We could send special units of duelists as far as war has to do. Be what Iweko I asked us to be in the last time the Empire was in danger during the Destroyer's War.

"Crane and Scorpion must maintain the Empire even as it threatened to fall apart, favoring the encouragement of others." That was the last time we were given straightforward commands and since the next time Satsu talked for Her we were not mentioned, now we know why. We keep having the same mission as she knew that the day would come, when we would be the necessary glue that would keep the Empire stuck together to face the forces of Jigoku once again. She knew then, will we obey now?
