That latest proposal is in no way contradictory to what Tacticus, Makoto and myself have written, so I am for it as well.

I am not particularly enthused about tying ourselves specifically to the Iweko dynasty, which I don't particularly care for and (more importantly) have serious doubts about the survivability of. The general approach is worth pursuing, though, I agree.

Let's call it: "the Left Hand of the Tengoku side of the dynastic battle"... ;)

"Left Hand of Tengoku" has a certain ring to it...

"Left Hand of Purity"? "Left Hand of Resistance"? How about "Left Hand of the Empire"? That would be a good way to convey that the Crane are doing their duty to the things that make Rokugan function, rather than to the specific individual sitting on the Throne.

I am not much in favor of the Iweko Dynasty, either, but they are the ruling dynasty. We can start from this point and we can later see who we will support, if things change. If we live another dynasty change, we can support an ally (whom we'll see then) or even go for Makoto (depending on the circumstances ). Bishie boy on the throne! And most importantly Left Hand in any non tainted Dynasty that may come up.

Left hand of the Empire sounds good... ;-)

What about Hand of the justice? Hand of the Law?

Here's what I think.

First, we should identify our needs, as we voiced in the "Concerns" thread. Then we should check whether the paths laid out in front of us take care of these needs. After we've done this, we should propose what a rational person would do.

Questions that I have that need to be answered before I can even begin to make an informed decision:

  • Will Kanpeki somehow have the blessings of the Heavens, will he be the rightful Emperor? If yes, why is neither Seiken nor Shibatsu the rightful Emperor anymore?
  • Will Kanpeki have the "blessing" of Jigoku as well/only have Jigoku's blessing?
Our needs, in shorthand:

  • We need to be able to charm people, and we need to be able to duel. Even if the Scouts deck is a deck Brian Reese knows how to make work, we need to be distinctive and Craney - now more than ever.
  • We need to fulfill our mission to guide the Empire and it's living culture. But that can't mean smuggling trinkets to other places. We're not archivists. We live and breathe culture, and much of it will not even be transportable. What about murals and castles and gardens? What sort of message would it be if the Crane abandoned the lands of their ancestors and all their most durable accomplishments? Are they so easily replaced so long as we can get away with our feathers unruffled? We cannot abandon our ancestral duty to the Empire that easily.
  • We need to preserve our strength. And that is based on our good standing with the clans, and our rice. We cannot abandon the Empire in that we can't just evacuate the breadbasket that are the Crane lands. We have a duty there too, and that is to the peasants that we can't just abandon to a Spider-led Empire.
  • We need to demonstrate our worth to the other player bases (in particular the Unicorn) - I don't know how #1 would achieve that to be honest. We would just be outclassed by the true heroes with their true armies. Maybe we can bring something to the table that is more valuable than our scouts. Everybody has scouts. We should contribute something that is uniquely Crane to the resistance against Kanpeki. And yes, I think it should be a very subdued form of resistance, because backing him against the general wishes of 80-90% of the playerbase is just not sustainable.

Now, two of the tasks laid out in front of us seem force us to abandon our lands. That is rather extreme, but AEG has never shied away from disproportionately hurting the Crane, haven't they? If this is a repeat of 2KYD, we were DEAD in that alternative timeline.

So, I think the message is that staying there and fighting will not work. For whatever reason, Jigoku-Kanpeki will be too strong (at least that's how I interpret it) and all clans opposing him are forced into exile. So our path, if we really want to serve the Empire, has to be to ENDURE.
We need to stick it out, and hopefully help steer the course of history towards the right path. I am thinking Kakita Yoshi in his role as Imperial Advisor to Hantei Sotorii - there was a fiction where he was accused of being a spy of the Emperor, but he was in truth a double agent serving the Crane at a high personal risk.

And yes, this will probably be a decision that forces us to take something similar to path #2 AT FIRST, but with the intention of helping the other clans in their insurgence against the usurper. And if they - in their ignorance - get to call us dishonorable, we get to duel or convince them, both would give us a chance to show our strengths.

The alternative paths that haven been suggested here have inspired me, I have to say, the Safehold approach in particular. However, I think Left hand to the Iwekos would basically amount to being path #1 if I'm right that it would force us into exile. If it would be an option to keep the Iweko on the throne, I suspect we would take it without hesitation. They force us to make a decision for a reason.

tl;dr - I think our path should be one of Enduring the Occupation. Play all sides but serve only the Empire, and demonstrate why we are the true heart of it. We can't leave, it will rip the living, beating heart out of the Empire's chest. The Emperor, whoever he may be, will not last as long as we do.

Edited for mixed metaphors. Ugh.

The problem I see with this is convincing Kanpeki that we support him without, well, actually doing so. Can we realistically conceal significant support given to resistance forces from him? Kanpeki is not a forgiving man; he is not going to tolerate that. If we can't conceal it from him, then the path is a non-starter; we would shortly be faced with the choice of either giving up on the purpose for which we embarked on it (and becoming collaborationist scum in truth as well as appearance), or of losing all ability to actually fulfill that purpose when Kanpeki turns against us.

In particular, if we try to convince the other Clans that we're actually on their side, we guarantee that the above will happen - because how exactly we going to keep word from getting back to Kanpeki at that point? Large groups of people cannot keep secrets. Someone always talks.

If we can't conceal things from others we really suck as scheming courtiers. I think for once we should be able to demonstrate that with things like Cadence and our network of favors, we're more than a match for anybody's spies.

Edit: We're basically everybody's relative sitting there in enemy territory. If they actually like us I think this will motivate them to fight for the Empire.

Edit2: And if the jig is up, then we fight and presumably die.
