Found some rayon that would do nicely for kimonos. Including this.

Lots of people were taking photos for that event, so maybe someone can post them.

My hands may be blue for a week but I have a most gorgeous set of hakama now. I can't wait to show it off.

Tips for dying hakama:

1) A pair of white, cotton kendo hakama is about 20-25$ on Amazon. That's what you want to start off with.
2) When you get the hakama, it may have stitches to keep the pleats in place temporarily. Whatever you do, DO NOT REMOVE THESE STITCHES. These things are awful to iron, and you will be washing them lots of times.
3) Bottles of RIT dye are about $8 apiece. I used liquid dye for regular fabrics. FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS in all things.
4) The very pale blue at the top is the aquamarine dye. I did this in the washing machine following the instructions with 1/2 a bottle of aquamarine, a cup of salt, and very hot water. I dyed the whole pair of hakama this blue. It is much easier to dye the whole thing one color, and dying in the washing machine is good for doing everything in a very uniform fashion. However, the color does not get super dark.
5) The band of sky blue in the middle, especially near the top, is the same aquamarine dye, using 1/2 a bottle of the dye, a cup of salt, and done in a very very large enamel/steel pan on the stove top heated to tea-temperature (below a boil). I dipped and started pulling out quickly, but was overall it still banded, but I was OK with that. Dyeing in a container is harder for something that is supposed to be a completely uniform color. You need to constantly monitor it and it takes at least 20 minutes. If you don't, or the garment is tricky/folded a lot, etc, you'll get the 'cloudy' sort of pattern you traditionally get with batique/tie-dye fabric. But the color is much more dark and vivid.
6) The band at the bottom is RIT Royal blue dye (1/2 bottle) mixed with the aquamarine. It looks a lot more purple/cornflower than the aquamarine, which has a more greeny undertone. I added the dye and kept pulling slowly. The bottommost color was in the dye for around 20 minutes.
7) Use a very big pan. A turkey roasting pan or a canning pan (which is what I used.) This takes a lot of water and is very messy. Be ready to get dye on your hands and clothes.
8) Make sure you have another container, bucket, etc to catch it after you're done dying.
9) If dip dying, hang the hakama up and pour water down from lighter to darker so the dye runs 'downhill' as you rinse it out and towards the areas of greater concentration.
10) After you add dye to the water but before you add the item you're dying, make sure you wipe all around the inside of the container above the water line with a paper towel so you don't get drips of very dense dye on the cloth.
11) Do not try to dye or wash two things that have been dyed together. This just ends up making weird patterns when they come into contact with each other.
12) After you've fully dyed it and rinsed it, wash it again in the washing machine with just a little soap, and then, if you like, soak it with dye-treatment that makes the dye stay in the fabric better. Rinse again, hang to dry, iron out wrinkles if you can manage it and you're done. I may take some spray starch to those pleats before I wear it, but I won't take out the stitches until the day I wear it.
