Here's my alternate path suggestion:
The Path of Compassion
The Crane have always valued compassion as an important element of honor. The Asahina temples have been a shelter for those who sought to change their path for centuries, and the Crane have been voices for peace and mercy since the days of Lady Doji.
If the Crane choose this path, they will offer shelter to those who have lost their homes or status to the forces of Jigoku, including those Spider who have chosen to stand against The Dark Emperor.
If the Crane choose this path, they will stand for honor and peace, against both the darkness and those who believe that remorseless violence is the only way.
However, some, especially more military minded clans, may view the Crane as siding with the forces of darkness by sheltering any of the Spider (even those who the Crane view as innocent). And sheltering enemies of Jigoku has never been a safe path. By choosing compassion, the Crane might be putting their very homeland at risk.
In the CCG, this is likely represented by political cards representing taking a peaceful path, as well as military elements with a strong defensive flavor.

Re: Another Way - Proposals for Alternate Story Paths
It was kind of tongue in cheek when I first typed this but the more I think about it the more it interests me in terms of potential story.
We Can Rebuild:
The Crane Clan's families cannot agree on the best course of action. This internal fighting fractures the Great Clan and smaller Minor Clans brake off each going their separate ways; The Daidoji off to war, the Asahina to the mountains to meditate on pacifism and set up a refuge for those left maimed or destitute. The remnants of the Crane, the Doji and Kakita, head to the colonies and establish a new political foothold from which to support the other Great Clans in their war whilst sending envoys to Minor clans with an offer to help in establishing the new court
We would loose the Asahina and Daidoji families from the clan, with the latter potentially holding a grudge that may come back to haunt the Crane once Jigoku is dealt with. We potentially gain access to Minor clans ie: Sparrow, Boar and Bat
Mechanically this would result in a focus on Political manipulation and Minor clan alliances possibly persuading others to fight on our behalf.

Re: Another Way - Proposals for Alternate Story Paths
Here is my issue with a lot of these 'shelter those who have lost' plans... It is decidedly western thinking. I understand the notion but it doesn't make sense for the Crane (historically speaking, Unicorn, Mantis and Sparrow are much more involved with the Ashigaru and Eta than the Crane. And the virtue of compassion is more associated with the Phoenix). It may make sense on some level for the Asahina, but they are the smallest family within the clan. In contrast, I am proposing another path option, one that combines both option one and option three in a way that benefits the Crane on all fronts and opens the door for dramatic story (which is what this is all really about).
Path 4: Guard the Way
This path utilizes key parts of both the To Do What We Must path as well as the Salvation path. Fighting the war on two fronts: one on the fields of battle and the other in the courts, like the Crane have always done in times of war. A majority of the clan stays in Rokugan to fight the forces of Jigoku. To rally the other clans against the darkness and the corruption of it's dark emperor. Not for glory, but for honor. Because it is what must be done for the empire and its traditions, traditions that the Crane have sworn to protect, to survive. Meanwhile a contingent of courtiers, artisans, shugenja and yojimbo shall travel the the colonies to establish control and make alliances and to foster the culture of Rokugan where we can.
This is a harsh path, but one the Crane should face with dignity and honor for the future of the clan and empire. The clan will lose much in the war in Rokugan and protection in the colonies will be light, but the presence will be smaller and not gather as much attention as if the entire clan fled. While the clan as a whole will gain the respect of the other clans resisting the darkness, those who leave will lose some reputation and could be seen as cowardly. This will test the clan on every front, but it allows the Crane, as a whole, do work as it always has in times of strife and chaos.

Re: Another Way - Proposals for Alternate Story Paths
I feel I should point out that the Crane - at least, the Doji and Asahina families - have a long tradition of holding Compassion in high regard, drawn from Doji's example. The Crane don't hold it as the #1 thing like the Unicorn do, but that's not at all the same as disregarding it, any more than all non-Lion Clans spit on honour, or all non-Crane Clans are discourteous barbarians.

Re: Another Way - Proposals for Alternate Story Paths
Compassion in high regard? Yes. Compassion to everyone including Ashigaru, Hinin, and Eta? Not so much. They are 'non-people' after all. This is the part where western thinking makes it fuzzy. The Crane have respected the celestial order or else they will have lost honor in the eyes of their allies and enemies.

Re: Another Way - Proposals for Alternate Story Paths
Actually, the Crane have always respected lower castes as part of the celestial order--in the very first story in the first edition Way of the Crane book, Lady Doji herself offers a blanket and shelter to a freezing beggar. In fact, Lady Doji was so touched by the conversation they had after this offer, the Doji Mon has a snowflake because of it.
