[Megagame] Mega-game Strategy
« on: January 14, 2010, 02:27:27 AM »

Hi my friends,

I would like to suggest a global strategy for the Mega-game. The idea is quite simple, but can be quite effective I think.

We should create a 'coalition' (not an alliance, just a coalition) of the 4 Honorable Clans (the "Fantastic Four" ? ;)) :
Lion, Crane, Phoenix and Dragon.

The goal of the coalition ? To be sure the Empire will get the points it needs to survive. To keep the Empire out of the game between the clans (to avoid vicious circles like 'oh you don't give a lot, so I'll give less too...').

The way I see it ? We all agree to give the same proportion of our points to the Empire.
So that we don't lose ourselves into maths, and because there's some kind of logic in it, I think :
2 Clans should give all their Glory points to the Empire, while the 2 other Clans should give their Honor points to the Empire.

This coalition could/should be joined by the other clans, following these rules. It is just both very roleplay and more efficient, to start it just between our 4 Clans, and it gives some very honorable flavor to it.

What do you think ?

Also, I think we should name Ambassadors that will be in charge to be present on one of the other Clan's forum, both looking at what is being said, and doing the intermediary between the two clans. These Ambassadors (one for each clan) should be aknowledged by the majority of the Clan's boards, and should, before doing something important or talking about something important in the name of our Clan, present it on this very forum to the Crane community so we can discuss it quickly before (we can imagine a reasonable delay could be 2 days / 48h).
(I would be a candidate to be our Clan's Ambassador on the Dragon boards by the way.)

Some of you might have understood, I love order and organisation. But I think it is important, although not as important as to actually win the points, to maximize the benefits gained by spending our points by using them the best way...  :)

Last point, we might suggest our Administrators to open a section about the new Mega-game (maybe just to change the Winter Court section into a Mega-game section ?), shouldn't we ?

Alliance with Dragon/ Phoenix and Lion?

Seriously..., Dragon are Scorpion allies, and Phoenix are Lion rivals since the Phoenix are custodians of the Imperial City.

We must hold Crane-Lion Alliance! nothing less nothing more.

It is not an alliance with Dragon, Phoenix and Lion, again. It is an overall agreement. Which is much different. We need to agree for the good of the Empire, that's all.

I'm totally for a Crane-Lion alliance, but that's just not the matter at hand here...

Alliance is a a union or connection of interests.
Agreement is a state of agreeing; harmony of opinion, statement or action.

Much different? you are saying ok "we're the honorable ones, we must work together", this sounds much more like an alliance.

Really, man. I do not want to enter such a debate (and you do not want that neither, I assure you -> "Never step inside a specialist's area").
I'm just going to say that no, there is a big difference between an alliance, a coalition (of interests) and an agreement.
There is no need to debate about that, that's the reality.

So I'm all in for the Crane - Lion alliance.

What I'm proposing is something different, an agreement that could lead to a coalition.

(Edit : I'm going to give one example only, just so that you can understand the difference. The G20 countries reached an agreement last year about financial regulation. That does not mean they are allied, not at all. This is not open to debate, this is not the subject of this thread.)

I can't honestly agree to this.

First of all, I don't trust Dragon players to reciprocate.

Second, The Crane aren't going to be a top five clan for this Kotei season, so every point we get needs to go to conserve the Clan.

Vote your conscience, I support that. I won't tell you you're wrong. I don't think building a coalition works for the Crane.

We need to stand on our own two feet.

The only thing I would see supported is Lion/Crane because I wouldn't dishonor Kurohito.

Priorities seem fairly clear-cut to me.  Glory goes to the Lion whenever possible, and to preserving ourselves otherwise.  Honor goes to the Empire, unless it looks like we're completely unable to win the honor donation prize (a prize that, from the Crane perspective, almost cannot be topped right now).  There isn't much room for other actions unless we so overflow with wins that we dominate.

Kentei-san, it's totally for debating purposes that I proposed this.
I know people will disagree, and I wanted us all to discuss about it. So thank you for giving me your opinion.

First, I don't know why you don't trust Dragon players to reciprocate. I was not around during the Race for the Throne, so I just don't know your reasons for that.

Second. I totally agree we will not be a top 5 Clan for this Kotei season. I also agree that we will have to work for ourselves first and in priority (as all the others clans, in fact). But working for the Empire is not necessarly not working for ourselves, because if we manage to get the Heir, it will be a great victory for the Crane, while we would have participated in defending the Empire.

Also, it's the "prisoner's dilemna game" and its later versions. If there is no communication and no collaboration, we will be into a blind game.
We need communication and collaboration. And we also need that every clan participates to the efforts of saving the Empire. Because if we start thinking that we will only work for our own, why wouldn't the other clans think the same ? And if everybody works for its own, then the Empire is doomed, and it is not what we want. So it is not a perennial model that you are proposing.

(In real life, I'm in this kind of matters, so I might be too much influenced by real life and this is just a game. But well, in some parts, it works the same.)

So to say more clearly my opinion.
I'm for a Crane - Lion Alliance. Strong. Unshakable.

But I'm also for an agreement on a kind of chart of good behaviour if you like, of all the Honorable Clans first, then with all the others Clans joining if they want, that says that we all have to participate to save the Empire. And that's the goal of my Strategy.

The goal is to make both us and the Empire stronger. But not by doing chaotic choices, but with a right overview of the situation, and defined goals.

They're allied with the Scorpion.  An alliance that was a powerhouse in the Race, so they have no real reason to abandon it.  This particular mega-game focuses even further on binary alliances than the Race, considering that there are now two categories of points rather than five.

I totally agree with that. That's what I said I was for, in the other thread.

But this works totally fine with the overall strategy I presented. We would engage to use all our Glory points for ourselves, while we would give all our Honor points to the Empire, both in order to gain the prize (fostering the Heir) and in order to participate in saving the Empire.

The thing is (and I'll come more about it later, I have to leave soon) that it's very different from the Race for the Throne.

The Race was an "opposition game", you needed to be the first in this and that sphere, and to beat this clan in this, etc.

The Plague mega-game is more a "collaboration game". By our choices, we cannot really hurt (let's say) the Unicorn for example. And there is no need to beat all the other clans in doing this particular thing to win this particular sphere. No, you win points that you use to advance your goals, or the Empire's goals. All the clans will work to advance their own goals, but all the clans will also have to collaborate in order to reach the Empire's goals.

That's why I'm not talking about an alliance with other clans. We are allied to the Lion, and we will only really help the Lion.
But we need to discuss with other clans in order to maximize the strategy of all the Clans so that we can all together help reaching the Empire's goals.

Here's what I condense the megagame down to for the Crane.

1. Target values for Glory & Honor for a clan
2. Rewards for a clan for donating to the Empire.
3. CHANCES for a clan to help another clan

Based on IA Membership, there is a value of Glory and Honor points for the Crane. Failing to achieve these have negative outcomes. Surpassing them will have positive outcomes.

I submit, that the Crane as a collective should do everything possible to exceed the Glory and Honor goals. Once that objective is met, everything else to the Empire.

I don't see any way listed to donate points to the Lion, or help the Spider etc.

Have to earn Honor and Glory and apply them appropriately.

At certain times, clans will receive the opportunity to aid other clans — so be on the lookout for the chance to aid your fellow samurai!

Here it is. It's not really to give points. And it will only be special opportunities. I guess that's what Corbeau was talking about.

What you said is right of course, that would benefit us to achieve all our goals with lot of exceeding points.
On the other hand, we will not be sure to have the Heir...

A point I think we do all agree at least, I guess and hope so :
We have to win the political prizes at the Kotei. We have ways to win them, we have very gifted and devoted players (I know Amanda Lau by name, but we have others also I guess), so let's win them ! :)

The quicker we fix our own problems, the quicker we can help the empire. I think we should focus on trying to dominate the kotei reason, but mainly honour. I feel we can be stronger united in one goal.

The lion dont need our points they have one of the best decks in Errata Edition.
