[Mega-game] Tips for Theme Decks
« on: January 28, 2010, 12:31:09 AM »

I read in the Mega-game section that someone wanted some piece of advice on how to build a theme deck. I must say that I'm curious too to know how to build a good theme deck. So please, feel free here to help us understand better how to win this kind of event ! :)

The theme decks we saw consistently winning in the Race for the Throne told a story.

Each card in the deck represented an aspect of the story, and usually a poster or small write up accompanied the deck, and as you played, you explained to your opponent the concept and what everything represented.

Usually, playing a theme deck puts you at odds with performing well in a tournament, but it doesn't have to be that way. Sadly however, deck performance is often sacrificed for optimal flavor when picking cards to represent a certain part of your theme.

I'm working on a theme deck for people to put together and use if they want, i should have the list finalized in a week, and and the accompanying story shortly after that.

Usually the more over the top you take your theme the better as well.  I look at the design of a theme deck as the design of a show, meant strictly for entertainment.  Most theme decks alter the art of the deck through printouts that overlay your actual cards, and some go the extra mile to incorporate design space.  I've seen some decks even adopt audio (like the first place spider deck in Atlanta (2008) and my deck in Aldershot).

There are two primary functions of the theme deck in my mind:
a) entertain your opponent and provide a "festive" atmosphere that overrules the sense of competition
b) provides a strong and interesting narrative that entertains the judges of the event.

The deck I saw in Atlanta was a "star wars" theme deck that used the imperial march whenever Darth Vader hit the table (daigotsu).  I'm sure you could piece together what else he did with ghuls being storm troopers, etc.

Anyways, there is also the timeless classic tale about the scorpion and the frog that gets told consistently by scorpion theme decks.  My current theme deck is operating similarly to my old theme deck, so i really don't want to openly broadcast what it does.  After March 6th we can try and distribute the materials if anyone is interested.

It's also possibly to play off of the frustrations of the player base at times.  Back in Samurai, when everyone and their dog was running superfriends prior to out-of-clan meta being printed, a Mantis Magistrate "Rokugan's Most Wanted" theme deck won the theme contest in Tacoma.

that is hilarious.  I could see a Clan "errata" coming out of this..  haha! having all the old versions meet the new versions before your opponent's eyes!

Funny stuff. :D
