Palace of the Breaking Dawn
Stronghold
PS 7
GP 3
FH 2

Your Ronin cards enter play paying 1 lessGold and ignoring Honor Requirements.

Battle: Even if this card is bowed: Give your target opposed Ronin Personality +2F.

Constructed by the masters of Sunrise Keep, it has been empty for centuries… until now.

And it's playable in Koteis! All you need to do is print it!

The flavor and purpose of the stronghold can't be duplicated by other boxes, but I want to discuss the functionality of this stronghold.

The cost reduction trait makes it almost identical to playing Ronin out of any Clan but Lion, and Unicorn can still buy their Ronin easier if HR isn't an issue.

So that leaves the box ability.  +2F to an opposed Ronin.  I like Shiro Daidoji more, but I'm biased.

Does this box offer any significant advantage to a Ronin Military deck over using another Clan's box?

In the midgame, -1 gold cost per Personality and Follower probably saves you 3 or 4 gold per turn; in terms of raw economics (ie looking just at gold production and gold costs), that is probably superior to having a 4 gold Stronghold.

You still need to factor in that Border Village is not boxable for a Ronin deck though, but even without Border Villages, in midgame, I think Breaking Dawn has a slight midgame economic edge for Ronin over other Strongholds.

In the early game though, no, I don't think Breaking Dawn is stronger than the other boxes.

Then again, if you want to play a Ronin Deck, I think this box speaks to that deckstyle better than any clan-aligned Stronghold.

Wow. 6G Ronins don't die to Fury or bowed to Census. This is simply wicked. Agreed with Marketeer though, it'll see strong mid game play. The choice of holdings is what'll make the deck reliable in the end.

Having your discount as a trait also makes bringing Ronin in outside of the Dynasty phase cheaper.  Civility costs you just as much as buying someone during Dynasty, for instance.

The 1 gold reduction is really cancelled out by the fact that the box only produces 3. The majority of good ronin cost 7 gold or more. It's not particularly viable tbh.

You still don't have a clan holding. If there was a 3-for-2 for unaligned, I'd think it were possible.

I think that because the stronghold only produces 3g it could have had a better battle ability.

They obviously want to distract some of the competitive players to not play something competitive. You know, like Hare clan in SE! Wink

With a stronghold that produces gold like Lion, without a clan holding and without clan reduction costs, with no built in draw card feature.. you have to be nuts to think that this is competitive. Especially when there aren't a slew of 4 Gold personalities that have the Ronin trait.

Currently ALL CLANS can buy their peeps at 2 less.
Ronin can only buy their peeps at 1 less. (ignoring honor requirements just makes it possible)

Again, at least Hare had 2 in-clan peeps.
*sigh*

On behalf of the Ronin players who just wanted a stronghold dedicated to pure Ronin, thank you design team.

That was the general idea, they wanted something that wasn't even a shade competitive, even if you squinted and tilted your head sideways.

It does what it was designed to do, allow people who want to play "ronin" at the kotei the opportunity to do so.  They just better not plan on actually winning anything.

Which is what the idea behind this stronghold is.  They can freely use it, but it's not like the two learn to play strongholds which were accidentally competitive.
