[EE] Crane Theme: Protectors of the Temples (Honor)
« on: March 04, 2011, 02:40:49 AM »

On AEG - here: http://www.l5r.com/emperor-edition-themes/
Protectors of the Temples
The families of the Crane Clan have always been a fluid group that have worked together to ensure the clan’s continued dominance in politics, the arts, and in dueling. Unique among the families, the Asahina have always been separated from the others due to their uniquely monastic traditions and their strong devotion to pacifism. Although sects within the family adhering to variations of their overall philosophy have risen and fallen in prominence over the centuries, on the whole the Asahina are a family of priests with a strong aversion to violence at all costs.
Despite this, however, history has shown time and time again that even the most pacifistic family must be prepared to defend those things that are sacred to it. The Clan War was a particularly devastating time for the Asahina’s sacred temples and shrines, and the third Yasuki War saw some if their most valued works of art sacrificed in the name of war. For this reason perhaps more than any other, the Asahina have accepted that when war is brought to one’s doorstep, allowing it to pass unimpeded only passes the suffering on to others. This is something the Asahina are no longer willing to do.
The sacred sites of the Crane Clan are under the protection of the Asahina family. In order to ensure their safety, the family has taken under its wing a number of bushi from the other families and trained them in the venerable art of zen archery, a meditative practice that the monastic groups within the Asahina have practiced for centuries. Looking to the example set by the great hero Daidoji Sembi during the Clan War, the Asahina understand the effectiveness their monastic techniques can have when unleashed on the battlefield, and while they regret the necessity of such a thing, they are no longer willing to permit enemies to prey upon them or those under their protection. All who would call the Crane an enemy will learn to fear the stalwart defense offered by the Protectors of the Temple when the time comes.
Whenever possible though, the Asahina are peace loving and focus on the element of Air, using that element to create works of beauty as well as tempering the aggression of those who would bring war unto them. The Asahina are also great at using their Air magic to strengthen their defenses. The Protectors of the Temples deck is an honor theme.

I feel that design gave us the honor machine of the phoenix. A very defensive deck built around shugenja at home and bushi in battle. Apparently, it will also have ranged attack. I'm somewhat disappointed for I don't feel the Asahina touch in the deck. Where are the fetish for example.

This is not unexpected at all, but I enjoy seeing more shugenjas for the Crane. I'm a little more anxious about the range attack part. With all the RA in Mantis and all the meta against it, I hope the Crane RA will have some specificities (maybe comparison to chi?), or it will probably not be competitive.

Well back in the old days when Crane had some RA (and RA's were Naga's main stick then, not mantis ) they were capable of picking of targets in other battles.

Other options are RA that increase in strength  by the amount of family honor or RA combined with movement.

FYI, Frotek, you've got the format for this thread wrong.
(Psst, I'm sure if you change it the red texters won't even notice).;)

SHUT THE FRONT DOOR!
Finally some F*ing Asahina Shugenja.
Sheesh!
All we had to do was b*tch and moan an ENTIRE ARC to get them back.
I hope we never see the likes of the start of CE again.
Crane have always had Shugenja with each arc's onset.
And it looks like in EE we will have at least enough shuggies for a theme! WOOHOO!
Asahina Archers FTW!

heh... no one's ever really happy.

Well, I for one say Crane Shugenjas mean Crane Enlightenment! From the sound of things this will primarily be a defensive deck, but it probably has the potential for military. But dude... Enlightenment! Or Claiming the Throne! Well, I suppose that one may not be legal anymore. But still, point is, I'm gonna make it happen.

Which also brings up another point. So far, before Celestial, the rings had changed text every arc since Gold. Even now the rings have slightly different text. I'm curious, does anyone think the rings will change again? It might be interesting to see something similar to what they were in the old arcs, where rather than another ability you can activate it just gives you a static bonus that's always in effect. I'm also curious if they'll still have cards like Changing Paths to make getting the rings easier.

Anyone have any thoughts? I mean seriously... Crane Enlightenment!!

Honor Running? :P

When all the previews so far have shown clans with win conditions not normally associated with that clan, we get honor running?

Sorely disappointed.

Oooh. Sacred pewpews. It has a Shrine of Champions feel to it though. But most likely it will be producing a RA rather than send home.

I'm very curious how the stonghold will turn out.

Well now hang on, I said it seems like it will be honor running. It may in fact be completely military in nature. The style of the text indicates that those who were normally pacifists are getting more aggressive. I simply thought that would mean they're more willing to enter battle. But it could very well mean that they've decided to screw being nice and pull out all the combat trick stops. Gotta consider, with Air shugenja, that could easily mean you're taking provinces you didn't attack. It could mean redirection up the yin yang. It could mean you have an army that never stays bowed. I can see all kinds of combat tricks they could do with that. Any of which would be pretty excellent to see. I'm not going to hold my breath for it though, because I don't expect them to give a military theme to Crane.

And someone mentioned something about themes basically building the deck for you... In the beginning of an arc that may be partially true, but there's a thousand ways to get around that, and not all of theme result in being non-competitive. For instance, eventually they'll have more cards for your theme than you could possibly ever fit in your deck. So deciding which cards go in and which don't will be a deciding factor on how your deck plays. And something I noticed is that themes often work best if you mix them. For instance, Crane Artisans on their own suck. But combine with Courtiers, and you could have dishonor. Combine with Duelists and you can rocket. Combined Courtiers with Magistrates and you can control. There's all kinds of ways to make things interesting.

Have not voted, since there is no option for "meh". Leaning towards expected and not cool - I wish they had shown someting exciting and new that breaks the mold, like they did with Crab and Mantis.

Seems like DT's creativity towards Crane is severely limited.

It depends on how much experience you lack. :-*
Corrupting anything and everything might be new to you, but it's so cliche to people that have played for more than 6 years.

Ask the Phoenix players.. they can tell you a thing or two about corrupt shugenjas. ;)

I voted as 'expected and boring'.

But to clarify, I like shugenjas in crane.
But having it as 'temple' related, makes it feel like a phoenix team.
Maybe I'm just not too excited about 'temple protection'.

But shugenja, ranged attacks, honor running is ok with me [expected / nothing new].
Adding item creation / manipulation might make this an ok theme for me.
