Kamiko's Origami thread extravaganza
« on: July 09, 2011, 06:43:12 PM »

Hello all, here I will be posting all of my origami creations for an L5R RPG campaign SpookyElectric is currently running for a group of friends. In the campaign, I play an origami loving Crane courtier who gives origami animals representing the clan mons to her friends and companions (and almost anyone else she deems worthy). I thought it would be fun to actually fold the real deals and give them to my friends. I will be posting all of them here for your critiques and questions. Enjoy.
_____________________________________________________________________

Origami Fox, designed by Román Díaz. Folded by me.
Folded for the Fox clan battle maiden in our group, the first in a set of animal creations I'm making for my L5R RPG friends.

This piece was folded with a single 9x9 inch origami paper sheet, no cuts, 2 hour completion time.

Origami jellyfish, designed by Manuel Sirgo. Folded by me with modifications to appear more like a man o' war.
Folded for SpookyElectric. Since he is the GM, I gave him the option to pick anything (anything at all) that he would like an origami of. He chose Jellyfish, lol. I don't know why, lets hope our party doesn't have to fight a giant pink origami jellyfish, or I will feel really bad. lawlz

This piece was folded from a 6 3/4 X 6 3/4 inch origami sheet, no cuts. 2 hour completion time.

Origami Mantis. Designed by Robert J. Lang. Folded by me.
This was created for our Centipede shugenja, but I decided to make him a Mantis due to all of the centipedes I've seen looked like tapeworms with legs. Mantis are far more aesthetically pleasing as origami.

Folded from a 7:19 rectangle white sheet then painted with a light coating of watercolor paint. No cuts, 3 hour completion time.

Origami Crab, Designed by Robert J. Lang. Folded by me with heavy modifications to look angry. This was created for our Dragon samurai player, but he is actually a huge Crab clan supporter, so I decided to fold him an 'angry crab' that is fighting. If anyone has ever gone crabbing or crab-fishing, you may be familiar with the fighting crab stance, when they rear back and thrust out their claws and usually spit water at you. Thus, the fighting crab stance.

Folded from a 9 3/4 X 9 3/4 inch square blue sheet. No cuts, 6 hour completion time.

Origami Panda. Designed by Robert J. Lang. Folded by me. This origami was folded for two players: the Dragon player and the Phoenix yojimbo player, both of which are avid "Panda Clan" advocates. From what I've gathered from random sources, the Panda clan are an elusive clan that has their stronghold in the midst of a bamboo forest. Due to their disconnect from the empire, they practice the magic of 'science' unhindered and eventually (with great time passing) end up becoming the space faring clan of the Emerald Empire. Not canon, but I didn't make this up either, lol. The big joke now is the fact that Spooky is a story team member and could potentially request for a Panda Clan, (with a rather surprising amount of peer pressure), but he HATES the Panda Clan idea, I don't know why, it is really hilarious. Go Panda Clan!

Folded from a 9 3/4 X 9 3/4 inch square black sheet. No cuts, 2 hour completion time.

Origami Unicorn. Designed by Donya Quick. Folded by me. This origami was folded for the phoenix yojimbo in the party. The player's most used and loved clan is the Unicorn so I decided to fold him one instead of a phoenix. I must say that I am extremely happy with how this piece turned out. I believe it is my most aesthetically pleasing model. I actually folded two of these, the first one was folded from a silver metallic backed origami sheet for practice. My step-dad happened to walk by and spot it and instantly requested that he have it! He is 56 and yet he was not at all ashamed to acquire my little unicorn origami and proudly display it on his banister! It just goes to show that grown men love Unicorn and there is nothing to be ashamed about, rofl.

Folded from a 6 X 6 inch purple metallic-backed origami sheet. No cuts, 3 hour completion time.

Origami Scorpion. Designed by Tadashi Mori. Folded by me. There are three Scorpion players in our group, so I will be folding three of them. This is the first, folded for one of two Scorpion courtiers. This is the first time I used tissue foil, which I had to special order from France, and it was totally worth it. I feel like such a noob for not using tissue foil sooner. It is stronger, more durable and more flexible than standard origami paper and holds the fold almost as well as origami foil. What a difference it makes.

Folded from a 12 3/4 X 12 3/4 inch copper tinted tissue foil square. No cuts, 6 hour fold time.

All three Scorpion folded. Left most is for the Scorp magistrate, middle is for my poor ronin/ex-Scorp/future Crane?? yojimbo, and the right is for the Scorp courtier.

Origami western style dragon. Designed by Kade Chan, folded by me. Popularly known as 'fiery dragon' by Kade Chan, this origami was folded for the unfortunate ronin in the group who has had to sleep in dirt and mud the entire campaign. I was going to fold him a bonus origami which was suggested be a wolf in this thread, but after seeing this model, I had to fold this one instead due to the challenge and aesthetics of the final piece. It has nothing really to do with L5R (not even the right dragon type) but who cares? It looks badass!

Folded from a 12 3/4 X 12 3/4 inch gold tinted tissue foil origami square. No cuts, 6 hour fold time.

Origami Crane. Designed by Román Díaz. Folded by me. This model was folded for Minoru who claimed the kotei bounty I had placed. He was very patient and I appreciated it, awarding him with a very technical crane origami. It is about time I folded a Crane for a Crane ;)

Folded from a 12 3/4 X 12 3/4 inch white tinted tissue foil origami square. No cuts, 4 hour fold time.

More to come as they are folded.

Great Work, but is there a Jellyfish Clan? Fox Clan got Fox.

No, there isn't a jellyfish clan, which is why the request was so funny. Spooky is an odd one.

The fox is so cute!

Now do these origami involve slander at all?  Like if someone were to happen to be carrying one around because they think it awesome and the wrong person finds them and opens them up, it will reveal assassination information inside of them?

Forum ate my post to this last night:

Really awesome work on the fox. ^^   I'm kinda jealous since I just can't for the life of me manage a decent origami-figure (unless origami sheep and bushes count).

I'm not sure, but I have a feeling opening up the origami may be bad luck or dishonorable. So unless they knew there was assassination information in them, they probably wouldn't destroy the origami.

However, that may be the whole purpose of giving the origami away, secret assassination requests!  :o  ;D

Awesome. I found something about origami earlier today, and thought I'd share.

OP updated with origami mantis.

Previous Mantis editions were more stabby and over all better, this just like the current arc mantis is inferior to the previous Clan Origami you've constructed, this mantis will never survive a battle with Jellyfish or Fox.
