Crane SUPERPAC
« on: February 19, 2012, 02:03:02 PM »

I was thinking about my Gencon plans and got to thinking about how players cant reach it, or other Kotei's, or have other monetary issues related to the game. But I also know there are other players who have money to spend, or some who are willing to chip in a few bucks here and there, or maybe are willing to offer a couch to sleep on if they live near a kotei area.

My proposal: Crane Clan Super PAC
Essentially a paypal account in which clan members can donate funds to be used be used to help members out.

IMPORTANT: I am not recommending I would run this supposed SuperPAC. I barely know how to use my Paypay account. I was thinking we could vote on several people who we know to be reliable, like Ben or Kae.

THINGS SUPERPAC COULD BE USED FOR:

1. Fuel Kamiko's Online tournaments. She spends a lot of time/money on this thing. We should help her out!
2. Help set up the Crane Clan dinner/party at Gencon.
3. Help members get to Kotie's or other big events.
4. Help costumers get costumes parts and fabrics.
ect

Money spent on the super pac should be openly transparent, and should not be given out whillie nillie. An appeals process should be set up to determine who should get money for what and how much. For example, Flying someone out of their country to attend a kotei would be completely unreasonable, but if we pay someone gas fare to cover 3 states and get them a place to stay, that would be good.

And people who request/ are given money would have to be fully identifiable. A real name/ address must be given. If the funds are to show up for a kotei, then that person must check in with a designated Crane clan member at that kotei, must play a Crane deck for the tournament, present a receipt for expenses, and return un-used funds back to the PAC.

Clearly a lot of guidelines and rules need to be set, but I think it would be a great idea.

I think this is a great idea, but finding the right group to manage it could be difficult and stressful.  I mean no offense to anyone, especially the mods since I think they do a great job, but there is a difference from managing say a forum and managing real money.  I'm reminded of the fact that back in college a club president for a club I was in was stealing from the club, since he had direct access to the funds.  He was a perfectly fine guy otherwise.  Its just something I would not have expected.

All that being said, I still think this is a great idea for helping players, especially getting to Kotei and GenCon.

As always, anything like this isn't affiliated with this website in any way. No mod here proposed this, and none of us have any intention of managing anything like this whatsoever,  and I wouldn't listen to anyone that suggests differently. Set up all the votes you want, but I and Ben at least will not run if nominated nor serve if elected.

Personally, I have no issues managing money as I am constantly stacking papers, but  I will pass on any involvement, as I think this is a bad idea in general.

Bad Idea is Bad. Last season we all griped about how buying players to defend Imaginary Castles that are supposed to be impregnable anyways is just silly. I know SUPERPac is a fun word because its voting year, but they're bad no matter how you plan to use the money.  Your best bet is to create a buying group in your local play area so you can buy bunches of boxes of cards to support the game we all love and play, and create the best decks and win tournaments.!

I know for a time during the race for the throne that the scorpions had something similar. It is a good idea but has a lot of risks associated with it. For example: "who gets to use it?" "Why do they get to use it over me?" so on and so forth. It is better when you have a clan goal, such as what Race for the Throne was and can use something like this to move an honor winner (who can most likely duplicate that win) to another location that they could not go to otherwise. But for these Koteis its just not the same. Good idea, bad in practice.

I would also like to point out that, while we provide space to Kamiko as a courtesy so she can organize her tournaments without clogging the Gen Disc forums, that is the extent of this site's involvement with it. We do not organize, promote, nor compensate anyone.

We would not be interested in providing space for some sort of money collecting thing, however, because even that level of involvement could prove complicating when it inevitably goes bad.

I'm not at all opposed to the idea, as long as it's strictly for charity. I just don't know if it's strictly necessary.
The main advantage I see is that money could be raised in advance, so if you suddenly needed to spend lots of it, it would already be there.  I don't know if we ever ran out of time whenever we needed to muster big donations. Ben and Kae would know better.

Also if you plan on having a core fund to be distributed for more than one purpose, you'll have trouble getting anyone to donate into it because they don't know exactly what they're donating for. For example, I'd be fine donating to a charity drive for can collections etc, but not for randomly undetermined other things.

Well, sound like everyone is pretty much against this, though it seems that is mostly due to it the concept being a bit too broad. Perhaps when the Honor event season starts we could do a series of smaller donation drives for specific events.

Charity options like this work better if there is a smaller group and something that is done privately, otherwise it will be "but why him/her and not me"-problems, drama and other unpleasantness. Sooner or later, such endevours can go bad.
I'd also point out that this isn't a Mega-game kind of importance-season, and people should relax a little. ;)
However, arranging such for Charity-drives are a good suggestion, as people know who is responsible for the money and that it goes to charity, rather than paying someone to go play with their hobby. But that's just my opinion.

For example, Flying someone out of their country to attend a kotei would be completely unreasonable, but if we pay someone gas fare to cover 3 states and get them a place to stay, that would be good.
I just want to touch on this one a little:
That is a very strong bias against the European tournament scene, and favoring the American scene instead. When it comes to European tournaments, most players actually do travel to a different country. While there are possibilites of going by car, bus or train, alot of people travel by plane.
And a plane-ticket isn't that much more expensive than paying for gas, considering that Europe got enough airline companies offering very reasonable prices for short distance flying.

Certainly no disrespect intended. I'm just not that aware travel situations in Europe. You know, because I'm American. The best reference I have is Watching Top Gear on BBC America, and it looks like traveling between the countries over there is roughly analogous to cross state boundaries over here, which would have been fine for what I was implying. I just didn't think it would be wise to pay for people plane tickets. Not only is immigration laws of different places a whole mess of hornets no one want to deal wit, but I didn't even think it would be good to fly from one US coast to another just on price alone.

essentially, my rough idea was "if you can get there on a single tank of gas, we'll cover that. But no ones really feeling the idea anyway, so the point is moot.

also,
