Also, any other viable way to play Crane other than Honor?

I believe that the Crane Scout Military deck is actually Crane's best deck right now. The cost of Crane scouts is definitely a hindrance, but I think going first as a military deck boosts it above the honor themes Crane has. The only problem is that Crab seems to have a similar deck that relies slightly more on Reconaissance.

Except the Crab stronghold is super powerful in current environment, and their people are thrice as good as ours :P

Look at a Crab deck and swap a bit of it around for Crane stuff, then add The Trap is Sprung.

I would suggest you look around for any of the other threads on Crane Scouts, such as Kioshi's http://homeofthecraneclan.com/index.php?topic=5469.0 or Tetsuro's http://homeofthecraneclan.com/index.php?topic=5527.0 before asking if there is "any other viable way to play Crane".  Making your question more specific would also increase the likelihood that you get a response that is what you are interested in.

Additionally, I would kindly ask that in the future, you have the subject line of your posts match the actual text of your post.

So would you say getting the starter is worth it?

How are you going to play the game without it?  Do you typically play another clan?  The starter isn't exactly chock-full of amazing scout cards, but you can't play without a stronghold.

If this is a roundabout way of asking if Makoto or Courtesy should be in your scouts deck, probably not, but I agree Hidden Falls Dojo is pretty much an auto-include.

No, Im new to the game. So you can only get the strongholds via the starters?

Yes. The strongholds, as well as some clan specific cards like Makoto, The Courtesy of the Crane, Asahina House Guard, and Doji's Guidance XP, are only available in the starters.

The starter for any clan is basically mandatory if you want to play that clan.

So you can only get the strongholds via the starters?

That is correct.  The starters include the strongholds, your clan champion, the clan follower, your clan holdings, your clan virtue action, and a large number of fixed personalities, actions, holdings etc.  The Designers have tried to design the clans to have four themes a piece.  These themes roughly correspond to the various strongholds the clans have.  Three of the Crane themes are honor decks, which attempt to win by starting their turn at 40 or more honor.  Honor decks are almost always defensive in nature.  The Crane Scouts theme, however, is military, and attempts to destroy all four of your opponent's provinces.  As the odd duck out, it suffers a little in terms of card selection (the Clan Champion and clan follower are not particularly good in this deck).  It generally could care less about honor and is more offensively based.  Scouts is a little difficult right now, and definitely so for newer players (there just aren't that many Crane scouts).  Unfortunately, a number of the Crane cards out there are intended for the three honor themes, rather than the one military theme.

Do you have players locally that you could talk to?  It's great to learn in person and l5r players are programmed mentally to be charitable to new players.

This is a pretty big thing. If you find a local group of players, especially longer term players, you'll find a lot of happiness!

Best bet then is to pick up starters of the clans you all want to play and go from there.

Personally I wouldn't worry about "viable" until you're trying to make tournament level decks. What's viable is based on your card pool, especially when you have a limited card pool as a new player.

Best bet is to play whatever you think you'll have the most fun doing. Also still look for any playgroup within reasonable distance of you. Everyone welcomes a new bunch of players :)
