Electronic Honor Counter
«
on:
July 08, 2012, 12:54:17 AM »
I'm curious, what would people's interest be in an electronic honor counter that isn't a smart phone app? I personally don't like the tactile feel, I don't like leaving my phone out on the table (Paranoid of losing it, probably unreasonably so, but that's me), and my battery life is not amazing. What features would people be interested in? And what would you be willing to pay for this? Especially if I could include a Clan Mon on it as part of the case? (I'm not sure the legality of this, I'll contact AEG if there is enough interest on it.)
I've put one together that uses a few 7-segment LEDs that is the size of a sleeved card (between 1/4" and 1/2" thick).
The digits are about 0.3" tall (About the same size as a D10), with buttons for increase/decrease and a programmable reset for 2 players. Currently it just lights up an LED to indicate negative.
I have not built a case for it yet, and I am looking for ideas of how to do it inexpensively that is not labor intensive. Ideally it will be a plastic, or possibly wood, box that is the size of a sleeved card.

My smart phone app was free and can keep a record of each honour gain/loss. So I wouldn't spend a penny, and even if it was free I doubt I would use it. That might just be me ofc.

While I won't go spooky-old, I also dislike using electronic honour counters. I use an honour counter, or paper and pen.

Entrepreneurial spirit is a wonderful thing but I don't see this working out. With two free methods, one with cost has to have superior utility to be a fair value.

One additional function I was debating was a timer on it for timing matches, Either something that counts down or counts up (I hadn't decided which was more useful), but I skipped that for the current prototype I built. Another option would be a dice roller or other similar "choose a random player" option on it. However, having a record of the match would be nice, but not something conveniently done in the format I'm using.
While I like the look of the wheel honor counters, they tend to get bumped or shifted easily, and are hard to read. Dice are a little clumsy since you can't increment/decrement normal dice quickly and its hard to indicate negative. I can't really argue against pen and paper other than keeping them around.
Which L5R Honor counter app is free, as I thought the official one was $1? Is it an MtG one? One MtG one I saw required using a spin box with your finger, which to me is a really clumsy interface. Mine does have the advantage of about 40 hours of battery life on the device which I plan on improving in the future, since I currently have a kludge fix on the board due to inexperience with the 7-segment displays, versus your smartphone having probably 10 hours of battery life, assuming you don't do other stuff on it during the day.
I now expect to see spooky only using an Abacus at any tournaments I see him. I do however agree that most people would rather use a different method than spend money on it, and it won't be cheap (I'm right now thinking ballpark $50, though I haven't worked out the price of parts). This doesn't eliminate the fact there might be a small market for it.

While I'm not Spooky old in my methods, I use dice to count my honor.

Just a couple of unsolicited features to make it a more unique electronic counter:
Progressive turn honor counting - honor tallies are recorded per gain/phase/turn. Could be too fussy, I know. But might be useful for analyzing your honor pace against certain decks. Could also be useful when building around cards like On.
BK reg use - just a way to mark that it's been used already.
I don't know about the feasibility of these, and these can just as easily tracked by pen and paper method, but it does give an edge over the phone apps and dice methods I've used.

personally I would pay maybe £1 for this but not for kotei play.
With a turn counter and possibly someway to break down what honor was gained in what phase of what turn, This would be useful for Playtesting. Being able to break down an average of when your deck should win/cross 40/get them to -20 is quite useful. However just a 9bit led screen wouldn't be that useful and for what I can imagine what I want I don't think it would be worth your time building the app.

I MIGHT think something like this would be cool enough to get, based upon the casing. But for the most part I use my Flying Tricycle honor counter for casual play and I use pen and paper for Kotei play (better record keeping for judge calls). But I do wish you all the best of luck on your endeavor!

Add a chess clock feature and you'd have something.

Add a chess clock feature and you'd have something.
A chess clock wouldn't be that difficult, as its a simple enough function to implement in hardware, though would require a bit of rework on the overall hardware to add that many more buttons/numbers, thought it would be a larger drain on the battery (Maybe half the life), and probably require a bigger board, making it larger than a standard sleeved card (My goal was for it to fit in the box with my cards). I've added a picture below.
The problem with tracking individual honor gains is that I've been keeping the interface simple. As you can see, buttons and LEDs, nothing complicated. LCDs are not cheap (In the relative scheme of things), and would be more expensive than the rest of the parts put together, which would be required for any form of complicated tracking.
Anyone have ideas where I could have a box built? Has anyone ever tried Ponoko? I'd really prefer not to have to mill it out myself.
